So what is a Tin Turtle?

Tin Turtle is a nickname given to the larger (40hp) Motor Rail locomotives produced for the War Department Light Railways of the First World War. The name was coined due to the appearance of the locomotives which carried weighty armour plating to protect their crews during use near the front line.

This website is dedicated to one such locomotive, Motor Rail 1369 built in 1918 for the War Department. Today it is owned by Armley Mills Museum in Leeds and is housed and cared for by the Moseley Railway Trust.

In these pages you will find details of the locomotive's history, its industrial career and general information about Motor Rail's Tin Turtles.
