British Electrical Vehicles produced a range of battery locos. Their type W217 shown here was manufactured from around 1937, this example being Works No T8033 of 1979. The drivers platform could be tipped up to reduce the overall length of the loco to allow it to be lowered down mine shafts of restricted sizes.

The W217 weighs 1.5 tons and can haul 15 tons on level track, with a top speed of 3mph.
